Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday despite playing with 10 men for almost 70 minutes after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd or 25th minute for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes. Erling Haaland scored the winning goal in the 60th minute, his ninth goal in Manchester derbies. The goal was initially flagged offside but was awarded after a VAR review.

The controversy centered on Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position and dove to attempt to head the ball but did not make contact before it reached Haaland. The Premier League's Match Centre said Fernandez did not play the ball, but offside laws state a player can interfere with play by clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent. United defender Lisandro Martinez claimed he stayed with Fernandez because the City player moved toward the ball.

Pro Ref released a statement saying VAR made an error of judgment and did not recognize the likely impact of Fernandez's position. The body said VAR should have recommended an on-field review by referee Michael Oliver and that it had contacted Manchester United to apologize. Former Manchester City players Joe Hart and Micah Richards both said the goal should have been disallowed. United coach Michael Carrick called the decision an injustice and said it was worrying.
