Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in the Middle East on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. ET, according to U.S. Central Command. All missiles were successfully intercepted. CENTCOM said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired the missiles in an attempted surprise attack. Axios reported the missiles targeted a U.S. base in Jordan, and CNN reported four ballistic missiles were fired.

The attack came one day after mediators said cease-fire talks between the U.S. and Iran made significant progress. President Trump halted new U.S. strikes on Iran last Friday as he weighed whether Tehran was ready to reach an agreement. Trump told Axios on Monday that if very deep talks with Iran fail, the U.S. will go back to very strong military action. Iran has denied seeking to resume talks with Washington.

Oil rose sharply in Asia trading following the attack. Brent crude futures for September delivery gained 3.42% to $86.97 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate futures for June advanced 3.58% to $82.09 per barrel. U.S. and Saudi forces also struck multiple logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq on Tuesday, retaliating against more than 30 drone attacks in the past three days by Iran-aligned terrorists, CENTCOM said.
