The story

Cruz Hewitt, the 17-year-old son of former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, won his first ATP Tour match on Tuesday at the Washington Open, defeating American qualifier Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4 in 74 minutes. Hewitt, ranked 612th in the world, did not face a break point and won 83 percent of his first serve points. He is the youngest player to win a match at the Washington tournament since Kei Nishikori in 2007.

Hewitt entered the main draw through qualifying after receiving two walkovers against Dusan Lajovic and Zachary Svajda. He was ranked 606 before the tournament and has surged to number 357 in the live rankings. If he wins another match, he is projected to crack the top 300. Hewitt reached the Wimbledon boys final earlier this year before losing in three close sets.

Hewitt will next play top seed and countryman Alex de Minaur or former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas. His father won the 2004 Washington title and his first ATP match at Adelaide in 1998 at age 16. Hewitt celebrated his victory by copying his father's signature gesture, holding up his bent right arm with his hand curled back.
