Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit President Donald Trump in Washington on Sept. 24, although China has not officially confirmed the visit. Xi is planning to bring a large delegation of Chinese CEOs, a departure from his usual practice. The summit comes after Xi's busiest travel schedule in more than seven years, including visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt this month and an expected BRICS summit hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Xi urged leaders from about two dozen developing nations, representing more than 3 billion people, to demand a greater voice in world affairs. He called for rising up against the historical injustice of a few countries dominating and bullying others, in what was described as a thinly veiled reference to the U.S. China was the only G20 member to dissent from a joint statement at this week's finance ministers' summit in North Carolina, objecting to language about countries with excessive external surpluses.

Some China watchers have low expectations for the Washington summit, describing it as focused largely on managing the stalemate rather than resolving it. At Trump and Xi's meeting in Beijing four months ago, Trump and corporate leaders were lavishly feted but left with few concrete business deals or clear breakthroughs on issues including Iran and Taiwan. One analyst said a key deliverable could be an agreement for further meetings between the leaders. The summit comes as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled a plan to target Iran's enablers with secondary sanctions, though he did not mention China, which is Tehran's top trading partner.
