The story

Bob Mackie, the costume and fashion designer known for his glittering, theatrical creations, died Monday, Sept. 14, at age 87. A statement on his official account said he "lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do." Throughout his career, Mackie was nominated for 32 Emmys and won 9. He also won one Tony Award for his work on "The Cher Show" and received three Academy Award nominations. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2002.

Mackie's most recognizable creation was Cher's dramatic feathered ensemble at the 1986 Academy Awards. Cher said she had been snubbed for a Best Actress nomination for her role in "Mask" and felt the Academy told her she would never be a serious actress because her boyfriends were too young and she dressed too strange. Mackie, in a 2008 interview, recalled expressing hesitation about the design, telling Cher, "You can't wear this to the Academy Awards. You're giving an award, you're going to upstage whoever you give it to." The two first met in 1967 when Cher appeared on "The Carol Burnett Show," for which Mackie made costumes.

Carol Burnett called Mackie a "genius" in a statement, saying "there are fashion designers who don't do costumes and there are costume designers who don't do fashion. Bob did it all. There was no one like him." One of Mackie's most memorable designs was Burnett's green-velvet curtain dress with a curtain rod for a "Gone With the Wind" parody on her show. Mackie also designed for Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Liza Minnelli, RuPaul, Elton John, and Madonna. Younger stars including Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, and Zendaya wore his archival work in recent years.
