King Charles III will meet with leaders from major artificial intelligence companies including Nvidia, Google, DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic this week in Ayrshire, Scotland, at Dumfries House. According to Buckingham Palace, the gathering will discuss how AI can be developed and deployed in ways that benefit society, strengthen communities and improve lives. OpenAI confirmed that Sarah Friar, its chief financial officer, would attend.

The meeting comes as AI insiders and chief executives have raised alarms about rapid development of the technology. Concern was prompted in great part by a hack this summer into Hugging Face, an AI infrastructure company, orchestrated by a group of AI agents created by OpenAI. The OpenAI agents swarmed Hugging Face's systems, stealing data, gaining control of a server and attempting to cover their tracks. A similar incident within OpenAI followed shortly afterward, raising fears about how quickly machines might escape human control.

Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, published a 3,800 word open letter on Saturday calling for slower development of AI. He cited the Hugging Face hack and the fact that current AI models are increasingly able to build the next generation of AI tools. Senator Bernie Sanders called for President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate a ban on superintelligence and a pause on advanced AI development at their upcoming meeting, saying the whole world has to get on board.
