FTX to Distribute $900 Million to Creditors on July 31

The story

FTX and the FTX Recovery Trust will distribute approximately $900 million to eligible creditors starting July 31, marking the fifth round of payments under the exchange's Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan. Eligible creditors who completed required steps by the June 16 record date can receive funds through BitGo, Kraken, or Payoneer within one to three business days. Convenience claims under $50,000 will receive cumulative distributions of 120%, while other customer claims will reach 105% and general unsecured claims will reach 103% of their allowed values.

The distribution follows a March payment of $2.2 billion and brings total payouts to about $10 billion since FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022. The bankruptcy plan values claims based on cryptocurrency prices from November 2022, when the market was at a low point. Some customers have criticized the bankruptcy process, saying they are being shortchanged by receiving cash instead of cryptocurrency.

A separate $18 million payment will go to eligible preferred equity holders on July 31, bringing total payments from the Preferred Shareholder Remission Fund Trust to $95 million. Creditors in 45 jurisdictions, including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, currently cannot select a distribution provider. Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2024, had his appeal denied last month, and the U.S. Senate this week unanimously adopted a resolution opposing clemency for him.
